When a sentence is hard, the instinct is to push through it. Speed feels like momentum, and stopping to re-read feels like failure. A lot of reading advice says the same thing: keep going, you will pick it up from context. For a passage you actually need to understand, that is backwards.

The thing that fails first at speed is not the facts, it is the inference. You can still say what happened; what fades is why it happened. Hard sentences are usually hard precisely because the why is the part that matters.

Hard is not the same as long

A long sentence is not automatically difficult, and a short one is not automatically easy. Difficulty comes from word frequency, from how deeply a clause is nested, from whether the sentence assumes something you have not read yet. Those are different problems, and they slow a reader down in different places.

The most measurable one is word length and rarity. Reading time per word is not constant: the eye needs longer for a word it has seen rarely, and longer for a word with more letters. A display that gives every word the same slice of time spends as much on “the” as on “notwithstanding”.

What the research supports

  • Comprehension holds to roughly 350 words per minute, then drops measurably between 400 and 450, and more sharply in a second language.
  • The first loss is inferential, not factual — the events stay, the reasoning does not.
  • Timing that follows word length changes reading rate in the lab; the duration has to vary per word, not only per minute.
  • More context reads better than less. Compared directly, showing more at once beats one word at a time for comprehension.

Put together, they point one way: the fix for a hard passage is time, not speed. That is not a slogan; it is what the per-word timing and the comprehension threshold both say.

So Punctum slows down

The reader watches where you rewind, where you pause and what you re-read, and builds a difficulty map of the book from your own behaviour. Dense passages get more time; easy ones do not waste yours. Timing follows word length and how often a word appears in this book, with small pauses at sentence ends and punctuation. You still set the pace; the reader adjusts around it. The honest limit

This is a map of your behaviour, not an understanding of the text. Early in a book it has almost nothing to go on, and it will sometimes slow down where you did not need it and miss a passage you did. It cannot tell that a sentence is ironic, or that you already know the field. You can override it at any point, and you should when it is wrong.

What it will not do is promise you a multiplier. Reading a hard sentence faster is not reading it better; it is only reading it faster. If the goal is to have finished a book rather than to have understood it, speed is the right lever. If the goal is the reverse, this is the setting that matters.
